The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts is scheduled to present A RAISIN IN THE SUN at the Sydney Laurence Theatre. The production is set to run from April 13-22nd.

Written by Lorraine Hansberry, A RAISIN IN THE SUN tells the story of the Younger family, and the arrival of a $10,000 life insurance check that promises to change the lives of the family.  In one of the greatest domestic dramas about the American Dream, four generations face the cost of dreams deferred and struggle with the decision to move out of a Chicago ghetto. Doubts creep in as to whether the children of the Youngers can raise the family’s standard of living beyond what their parents have achieved. Each member of the family has something at stake, and each member of the family is at risk of losing what is most important to them. Full of family, love and hope, A RAISIN IN THE SUN has been hailed as one of America’s greatest classic works.

A RAISIN IN THE SUN originally opened on Broadway in 1959, where it won four Tony Awards. The New York Drama Critics' Circle named it the best play of 1959, and it ran for nearly two years and was produced on tour. It has gone on to spark numerous revivals, film productions, and a televisied staging starring Sean Combs, Broadway veteran Audra MacDonald, and Phylicia Rashad.
